What is banding treatment for haemorrhoids?
How does banding work?
Haemorrhoid banding is a simple and direct way of treating haemorrhoids when other treatments, such as ointments or pain relief, are not enough. It is a minimally invasive procedure that is usually performed in the doctor’s office. This operation includes putting a device similar to a rubber band around the base of the haemorrhoid to restrict the flow of blood to the haemorrhoid.
Because there are no nerves at the base of a haemorrhoid, banding causes no discomfort. The band restricts blood flow, therefore the haemorrhoids shrink and fall off after 7-10 days. As a result of this treatment, you won’t even realize it’s occurring.
What sort of haemorrhoids are suitable for banding treatment?
Internal haemorrhoids are candidates for haemorrhoids banding as they occur on the rectum and anus linings. Because of the success rate of rubber band procedure, doctors prefer this clinic-based treatment for grades I to III internal haemorrhoids.
When is banding not suitable?
Banding may not be for everyone. Haemorrhoid banding is only an option for internal haemorrhoids, not external haemorrhoids. Grades ll and lll internal haemorrhoids can be treated with a rubber band ligation. Banding is ineffective in treating external haemorrhoids or haemorrhoids that protrude substantially.
What other options are there?
The Rafaelo Procedure is established in the UK as the latest radiofrequency technology. Surgeons use this minimally-invasive procedure to eliminate haemorrhoids in 15 minutes or less. There is a very high success rate with this procedure and it is considered the gold standard for treating haemorrhoids.
Haemorrhoid injections or sclerotherapy is another more cost-effective option. This involves the injection of a chemical solution that gradually shrinks haemorrhoids. It is typically reserved for grades l and ll internal haemorrhoids.

What to expect
It’s a simple treatment with little side effects or discomfort, but it provides long-term relief. Banding only takes only a few minutes out of your day. You may want to have someone escort you, but you are free to leave after the procedure.

Banding is not a serious surgery so, it’s more cost-effective at £750 where appropriate.

What are the aftercare requirements?
After the procedure, your bowel movements may not be regular and so expect this. Avoid constipation and straining while having bowel movements. Straining can lead to future haemorrhoids. Your doctor may want to go over foods or supplements that increase fibre intake so BMs are regular. You also want to avoid heavy lifting for at least 24-48 hours after the treatment. There usually are no complications with haemorrhoid banding.

During the consultation you will have a detailed consultation about your concerns. The examination normally requires a proctoscopy examination which is a gentle quick procedure to identify if there are any haemorrhoids or any other issues. A treatment plan can then be discussed and you can then return at a later date to have them treated at a convenient time. Consultations are valid for 3 months, after which another consultation may be required to check for any change in symptoms prior to treatment.

Haemorrhoids (also known as ‘piles’) are swollen cushions of blood vessels around or just inside the anal canal (back passage). There are two kinds of a haemorrhoid: internal and external.
These haemorrhoidal cushions are normal anatomical structures but are made to swell and balloon by straining on the toilet, pregnancy, heavy lifting, family history, overweight that then cause bleeding, itching and soreness, discomfort, mucous discharge and protrusion through the anus.
The consultation and treatment take place at 41 Harley Street, London W1G 8QH. The clinic is registered with the CQC (Care Quality Commission) with an inspection report in August 2019 passing it as good.
Lifestyle changes to diet, to increase oral fluid and fibre intake thereby softening the stool will help reduce straining avoiding straining and avoiding strenuous lifting.
Treatment options are radiofrequency (Rafaelo), ligation (rubber banding) and injections. These are carried out as outpatient day cases under local anaesthetic. For more extensive haemorrhoids surgical removal under general anaesthetic is required.
