This is the destruction of skin tissue by using liquid nitrogen to freeze the skin cells until they die.
The freezing treatment normally involves 5-10 seconds of the liquid spray is applied with a break of 1-2 minutes between treatment cycles. The duration and number of treatment cycles depend on the skin type and the nature of the problem.
There is a slight burning sensation during the procedure but this stops once the treatment has ended. It is quite usual for the skin to blister afterwards for a few days then go red. Most of the wounds would have healed in under a week.

Laser treatment
We now offer laser treatment as our preferred option for warts and skin tags. We often use a microcautery device for fast and effective treatment of these minor blemishes.
Where laser is insufficient or unsuitable, our team is fully trained in microsurgery techniques which give an excellent result in removing troublesome skin lesions with minimal discomfort and scarring.

Cryotherapy FAQ: Questions & Answers
Cryotherapy is also known as freezing treatment. The doctor or surgeon uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the skin cells using very cold temperatures. This kills the skin cells in the area. After a few days, the blemish will shrivel up before eventually falling off.
The freezing treatment normally involves 5-10 seconds of the liquid spray, applied with a break of 1-2 minutes between treatment cycles. Your appointment will normally be around half an hour, to include time for consultation and aftercare advice.
The duration and number of treatment cycles depend on the skin type and the nature of the problem. Cryotherapy can take a few sessions to fully eliminate the problem and for this reason, we may recommend alternative treatment methods for a more efficient approach.
For removal of small skin tags or warts, cryotherapy or freezing treatment is a quick low priced option.
For removal of larger skin tags or warts, or those that are stubborn or well-established, we may recommend laser and/or surgery for best results.
After intense freezing treatment, it is most likely that there will be some form of scarring. However, after redness has faded, this is rarely noticeable. It tends to be quite smooth.
Scarring from cryotherapy is usually less than you may experience from other forms of treatment and definitely less obvious than the skin lesion.
Your doctor/surgeon will explain fully what to expect after assessment of your blemish.
There is a burning sensation during the procedure but this is very brief, lasting only a few seconds. The sensation stops once the treatment has ended.
Your skin is likely to swell and go red for a few days where it was treated.
Most patients develop a blister afterwards. This usually settles after a few days and then forms a scab or a crust that will harden for a 1-2 weeks before dropping off.
It doesn’t tend to hurt too much after the treatment itself, but you may feel sore or uncomfortable for an hour or two.
It is fine to take painkillers (such as paracetamol) if you need to. Any discomfort normally passes relatively quickly.
You will be given full information in your consultation, so that you know what to expect prior to treatment. Follow the doctor/surgeon’s advice – this is likely to include:
- You may be advised to cover the wound with a plaster or dressing, but this isn’t always necessary
- Wash with mild soap and cool water for a few days to avoid irritating the wound
- Once initial healing has taken place, you can apply an ointment to keep the wound moisturised and reduce the risk or appearance of scarring (Vaseline, Bio Oil or silicon scar gel)
- It’s OK to shower and bathe, but avoid excessive submersion for the first week
