Treatment for protruding ears - no overnight stay!
Protruding Ears?
Are you self-conscious about the appearance of your ears? Having ears that stick out is not a feature to which many would aspire. It can be reminiscent of comic cartoon characters and many patients find they are embarrassed about their ears, especially when it leads to being teased.
Pinnaplasty, also known as ‘ear pinning’, is a surgical procedure designed to correct protruding ears. This procedure can help to improve your overall appearance.
What is Pinnaplasty?
Pinnaplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that reshapes the profile of the ears to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. It specifically addresses protruding ears to make them fit nearer to the head.
This is not the same as otoplasty, which encompasses ear pinning along with other reshaping concerns.
The Procedure
Otoplasty/Pinnaplasty is typically performed under local anaesthetic. The surgeon will make incisions behind the ear to reposition the cartilage and skin. The procedure usually takes 1-2 hours to complete.
Recovery from Otoplasty/Pinnaplasty
After the procedure, you may experience some swelling and discomfort. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days. It is important to follow your surgeon’s instructions for post-operative care to ensure optimal healing.
Benefits of Otoplasty/Pinnaplasty (Ear Pinning)
Pinnaplasty can offer numerous benefits, including:
- Improved self-confidence
- Enhanced appearance
- More balanced facial features
- Increased comfort
- Easier hair styling
Procedure - Step By Step
Before the Procedure
- Consultation: You’ll have a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and expectations. They’ll assess your ear shape and determine if you’re a good candidate for the procedure.
- Medical History & Exam: Your surgeon will review your medical history and perform a physical exam to identify any potential health issues that could affect the surgery.
- Anaesthetic: You’ll be given either local anesthesia (to numb the area) or general anesthesia (to be asleep during the procedure), depending on your preference and the complexity of the surgery.
Steps of the Procedure
- Incisions: The surgeon will make small incisions behind the ear, usually within the natural creases.
- Cartilage Reshaping: The surgeon will access the cartilage through the incisions and reshape it to create a more natural fold and bring the ear closer to the head. This may involve removing excess cartilage or making small folds in the cartilage.
- Suturing: The surgeon will use permanent sutures to hold the reshaped cartilage in place.
- Closing the Incisions: The incisions will be closed with dissolvable stitches.
Bandaging: A bandage will be applied to protect the ears and support the healing process.
After the Procedure
- Recovery: You’ll be monitored in a recovery room for a short time after the surgery.
- Pain Management: You may experience some pain and discomfort after the surgery, which can be managed with pain medication.
- Bandage Removal: The bandage will be removed a few days after the surgery.
- Healing: The incisions will heal within a few weeks, and the swelling should subside within a few months.
- Final Results: The final results of the surgery will be visible after several months, once the swelling has completely gone down.
