Dr Ross Perry’s expert advice on skin issues scabies was published in Indy100 (The Independent’s upvoted news site). The feature was also shared in The Mirror and a host of other titles.

Doctors have raised concerns about a rise in cases of scabies this winter and The Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies has alerted the public about medication shortages for scabies treatment.

What is scabies?

Dr Ross Perry, GP and medical director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, told The Independent that scabies is:

“an incredibly uncomfortable itchy and bumpy rash”

It tends to affect hands, fingers, groin and armpits the most; but can appear anywhere on the face or body.

Scabies is actually caused by mites and is the skin’s reaction to saliva, eggs and faeces of the parasite mite sarcoptes.

It is highly contagious, so spreads easily through direct skin-to-skin contact. It can also spread through shared bedding, clothing and towels.

Dr Perry said:

“Scabies rash can actually take up to eight weeks to appear on the body, during which time it can be spreading at an alarming rate, particularly on bedding, towels and clothes”

Scabies Treatment

Dr Perry’s advice for anyone who suspects they may have scabies is to see their GP in the first instance.

Early treatment is the best course of action. Treatments are usually based on a topical cream or lotion applied to the skin. This is applied all over the body in order to treat the mites and any other members of the household should be treated.

He continues:

“Equally, wash clothes, bedding and towels immediately on a hot wash, and vacuum carpets and furniture. Personal hygiene is also of paramount importance, washing thoroughly, particularly frequent washing of the hands, and avoiding sexual contact if you suspect you might have scabies until treatment is completed.”
